How can I stop my hair from breaking everytime i comb it?

I am a African American woman and my hair is breaking. It started when I twist it one night, let it dry and took it down, because I wanted that wavey look. well, it didn't turn out right, and when i combed my hair it started breaking, and it has been breaking every since that day, before then, I would comb it all day and not breakage, could the twist have been the cause of the breakage, and what can I do to make my hair stop breaking and spliting and get strong again, like it was before the twist. Is there some type of treatment i can use to get my hair strong again, or is there something i can take. Last but not lest, how can you tell if your hair is strong and healthy, by doing a strand test, what do you look for? thanks for your help

First of, let me say that I can completely understand where you're coming from. It's a terrible feeling when you have your hair healthy and looking nice and then to all of a sudden deal with breakage. It's annoying, but it can be helped. Do you know if your hair is breaking from the middle of the hair strand or from the root? If it's breaking from the middle, you may have put to much of a strain on your hair, over-processed it, using to much heat, lack of moisture...etc. If it's breaking from the root, that may be an indication of something internal such as: lack of proper diet, stress, nervousness, thyroid problem, not drinking enough water, ...etc. When you did the twisties, did you put in a setting lotion and leave-in conditioner so that your hair would air-dry but still hold in moisture? Because usually twisties and wet-sets are the preferred hairstyles that beauticians recommend when a client is experiencing breakage and shedding. However, you know that your hair is breaking and the main thing is to get the hair back strong again. And to do that you will definitely need a Reconstructor Conditioner and shampoos and conditioners that are moisturized. Reconstructor Conditioners are infused with Keratin Protein which is important for the hair to have. Protein in the hair is what makes it strong and helps to strop the breakage due to it being weak. Aphogee Reconstructor is good, Joico K-Pak Reconstructor is great but pricey, and CHI Silk Infusion have great treatments. Use a Reconstructor at least once a month or once every two weeks, but when you use this it's important to follow it with a moisturizing shampoo or conditioner or it will make your hair dry. When you wash your hair, use luke-warm water instead of hot water because it will dry the hair out more if it's already breaking and is dry. Wash your hair in the shower rather than over the sink because your less likely to tangle the hair when your washing it with your head going back. With the breakage, the least thing you need is for it to get tangled from washing it forward and then having to comb it trying to get the tangles out. Use a moisturizing shampoo like Cream of Nature, DesignEssentials, Mizani, and KeraCare. Then follow up with a deep conditioner and a leave-in conditioner. DesignEssentials has a great leave-in conditioner that's called Therapeutics RX leave-in conditioner that affordable and you can order it online. It smell good, leaves the hair very soft, and can be used everyday on damp or dry hair. And follow-up with wrapping your hair at night with a silk scarf. Drink lots of water, maybe take a Vitamin E supplement to help with the blood flow, and eat more protein and fruit. And most importantly, don't do box perms, go to your beautician if you need a perm, box perms will only make it worse. Right now, if you were to do the strand test, you would know if your hair is unhealthy by taking your index finger and your thumb and taking one hair strand and placing it between those two fingers and gently pulling it. If you pull the hair strand gently and it doesn't break, it just goes back into it's position, then your hair elascity is good and your hair is healthy. But if you pull it and it quickly breaks, then your elascity is poor and your hair is weak and unhealthy. If it's really bad you may have to cut of the damaged parts and start over, but if it's not, it's worth working with. Good luck.

I'm not an expert but I know that there are vitamins you can take to help strenghten hair. Make sure your getting your daily recommended amount of protein and other nutrients. And of course, wash and condition with good shampoo/conditioner. Good luck!

It will definitely take a while to repair. Hair is very delicate and takes patience...but some things you can do along the way is to make sure you moisturize it...once or twice a week, you could put mayo all over your hair, and put a plastic bag over it and hold a dryer over it for about...but don't hold the dryer the whole time...every 3 minutes or so for just 10 seconds, just to heat it up..then rinse well, and apply a nice deep conditioner...one that i've noticed works great for my hair (not African-American but had very damaged hair because of dying) is Aussie's 3-minute miracle. Also, try to avoid brushing your hair while it's still wet...that breaks your hair, and yes, twisting it could have been the cause. As far as strand tests, I don't know much about that, but if your hair is breaking while brushing, then it's not healthy.

You definitely need to moisturize your hair. If you do it at home Queen Helene's Cholesterol treatment works well, and if you are on a budget you can buy a jar of mayonnaise and use that to condition you hair. I know it's gross but it definitely works. Another thing is to make sure that your ends are clipped...if you ends are ragged it won't matter if you condition or not...

I do not know if it will work on your type of hair, but I use a shampoo and conditioner that is made by Herbal Essence. It is called Break's over and it helps prevent breakage.

Here is the website, for more information...

Comb it from the bottom of the strand little by little. Protein strengthens hair. I take gelatin. when you wash and dry it - use a conditioner for dry hair and don't rub it dry with a towel - wrap it up and kinda squeeze it.

Your hair has become dry. You should of applied a comb out spray and a hairdressing before attempting to comb it out . Or your trying to comb too much hair at once. Need to take a small section and start at the roots (using a large wide tooth comb) and gently comb 1/4 of a inch at a time until you get to the ends.

Need to get your ends clipped and apply a deep conditioner to it.
