After hair dye has faded?
Ok 1 don't listen to the one that said bleach it and immediatly dye it. OK STOP giving advice. That will kill your hair and the color will not last at all. What world does he come from. sorry to sound bitchy about it. I just cannot stand when someone has not a clue tells you that it will work trust them and give the worst advice of all.
I am not sure what you first mean your highlights fade? They are already light. Did they become dull? I am a stylist of 12 years and also a master educator. Their is no way doing highlights that you cannot pick up the old highlighted hair. You can avoid lifting it more by just not highlighting though the ends.
but you are not wanting highlights any longer I take it? ALL color fades. EVEN your own hair color. You might try going to a master stylist that specializes in color. Anyone can apply color it is the knowledge that needed. if you want to go dark you should have someone fill your hair first then apply color. I am not going to get into the whole technical filling and color correction information. You need to go to a good stylist and they will know. if they don't do not sit in their chair.
Also do not use any over the counter products ONLY products suggested by the stylist that is the color professional..
I know stylist all over if you need a referral!!

If you're not already, you should probably be going to a salon and having it done. They will use the best, long-lasting color on your hair. If you are doing it at home, make sure you are buying permanent, NOT semi-permanent or some other type of wash-out color.
As far as the least amount of damage, there's not much you can do. I can't say from experience on this part, but henna is supposed to work pretty well and from what I understand, there is little to no damage involved. Use deep conditioners, and seriously consider keeping your hair it's natural color! That's the healthiest thing you can do for your hair! Good luck
PS. PLEASE don't bleach it. You're just asking for your hair to be completely FRIED that way.

Try highlights with bleach, they don't fade. If you don't wan't your highlights blonde, then the bleach can be toned to whichever color you wanted.
If you wanted to continue doing it the same way, then ask your stylist to put a clear gloss on top of it to hold the color for a month, or you can go to Sally Beauty and buy the same thing for about $8 bucks.

try redying it with a semi-permanent, it will wash out, but it will keep the colour in while you are waiting for the permanent dye to grow out. there are some nice colours, and they are not too harsh on your hair, remember to give it a conditioning treatment occassionally.
