Also my pony is scratching her neck so much that the fur has gone and it is beginning to look really sore. They are both wormed, eatting and drinking fine seem perfectly healthy apart from their facial hair seems to be thinning and the pony is scratching and biting her flanks
Both of my horses facial hair seems to be thinning out in some spots, and my little pony is biting her flanks?
the problem could be lice and this is a good place to start. if you are pretty sure it is not lice it could be an allergic reaction to a fly spray or to the shampoo you are using or you may have washed them to often and now they have dry skin. if you blanket your horses then changing the laundry detergent could cause a reaction as well but not very likely. if you don't wash your horses it is possible that they have a build up of dirt and other stuff that is causing them to Itch. do some checking and see if it could be any of these things things that have been mentioned (except strangles). if you don't find anything then you should call your vet and ask him to have a look at the horses. Good Luck

could be strangles...a skin disease

Sounds like fleas or lice. If it is, then the sooner they are treated, the better, or you could have major hair loss on your hands. Get them checked by a vet.
I know.... vet fees..... but if its something serious, it will pay off big time to check it out sooner.

My horse had the samething goning on with her, It was called Stud Crums. What my vet had me do was, but this cream on the place's she had it. so call oyur vet out to cheat it out just to be sure that its nothing bad.

I would go with lice.....
They make an equine bath for lice, get some and see if it helps out. If not, then your probably dealing with allergies and those can be tricky to figure out.
Also to the first poster, STRANGLES IS NOT A SKIN DISEASE!!!!! would you people study before spouting off information that proves you dont own a horse!

It sounds a bit like sweet itch which is an allergic reaction but seeing as both are affected, it's more likely to be lice - sorry! Get a can of louse powder and cover everything of their's in it, blankets, halters, brushes etc as well as them. Anything that touches them wants louse powder.
And for the record - Not strangles

I, too, say NOT STRANGLES.
It could definitely be lice, but it could be sweet itch too. I had a pony who had sweet itch, which comes from tiny biting midges. It's supposedly a seasonal allergy (based on the midge life cycle), but his went away after a few years. We kept him on an antihistamine while he was affected. He had the same issues as you described, and would rub the hair off his neck until he was bleeding!
I second the person who said to get a vet out there-- it is a pain, but they can tell you for sure if it's lice, sweet itch, or something else.
Best wishes and happy trails!

it might be flies. fly spray is a good thing to invest in, if it is. my horse has the same problem. try to soothe the iritated skin with lotion or something.
